Jack & Bobby
Back in June, I wrote about Jack & Bobby, a new show the W.B. was premiering that I was looking forward to, well tonight I watched the first episode.
Unlike most shows that I think look good, which I then immediately don't like, this one looks like it could live up to my expectations. The subject is interesting to me, but since I have the attention span of a small child, if it wasn't well executed, that wouldn't be able to keep me. But everything about the show seems good. The way they set it up, the subject, the acting, the feel.
It's split between two times, the present and the year 2049, when people are looking back on the McAllister presidency and on the events that shaped the future president. That is when we meet Jack and Bobby, two teenage boys, one of whom will become the leader of the free world (with a woman vice president--how cool is that?).
Right off the bat, I knew that Bobby, the younger, geekier one would be the one to be president. I mean the names are a little too much as it is, they even make reference to that in the show, but having Jack grow up to be president would be too obvious. Besides, all the indications seemed to point to Bobby, except one which I have to admit still disturbs me, though it wasn't revealed until the end of the episode which one became president.
I have to admit, I was kind of hoping I was wrong and it was Jack. I liked both characters off the bat. Moody, popular Jack and independent Bobby, who's kind of a social outcast because he follows the beat of his own drummer (that and because he's a little too much like their weird mother, who I liked too).
But one of the articles I read about the show made reference to the fact that one brother became President and the other died young, they also made reference to it at the end of the episode. And though I liked both brothers, I became more attached to Jack, because he's got an attitude (also the actor's pretty cute), so I didn't want him to die, but it's not my show and it does make more sense to have it be Bobby who grows up to be President.
The thing that disturbed me is that in the future they had an interview with Mrs McAllister and it's revealed that she's the girl that Jack develops a crush on in the first episode. This was back when we didn't know which brother lived and which one died. It's revealed that she was once in love with Jack, but then things changed and he died and years passed and she married Bobby. Which is a little weird. But... That's just me.
Still, that slightly creepy, yet fitting, part aside. I liked the show. It fits well, as a nice vibe. Kind of sad, kind of nostalgic, since it's told by people looking back. I don't know if the rest of the episodes will live up to the first one, I hope so, because it's been a while since I've been really excited about a show.
This one has potential and it excites me, so I'm hopeful. Well, I just spent several paragraphs rambling about at TV show and fictional characters, so I'm gonna stop now before you all think I'm crazy.
